For the sake of this discussion, let’s first set aside all of the legal, ethical, and sustainability issues that currently exist with generative AI. Let’s assume that we have a magic solution that will solve all of those problems as they stand. The big …

I want to make my own games. im 62 so i dont have much time and I want to learn to use AI to generate 3d models, specifically complete levels/ environments. I know my way around belnder and gimp so if i can just get all the basic geometry into place, I can refine it from there with tweaks and new textures. So what AI tools are out there that can achieve what I’m thinking? Thank you so much!
Sorry, I’m not big on generative AI here. You can always buy assets off of the unity or unreal marketplace instead.[Join us on Discord] and/or [Support us on Patreon]Got a burning question you want answered?Short questions: Ask a Game Dev on TwitterSho…
What are some unspoken agreements between game developing companies and game devs?
I feel like most of these are true of working in general, but there are some things that come to mind.If you find a new job that suits you better, your employer will be sorry to see you go, but will generally support you in your choices and career. The…
Hey so considering what happened with Silksong’s release and some discussions I saw on my dash and Twitter tl, in your opinion what are the particular advantages/disadvantages to allowing pre order and preload? And are there many extra hoops for devs to jump through to achieve it or is it purely an upper management deal?
Preorders were originally a pretty good way of predicting overall unit sales — the correlation was pretty good. When the publishers figured that out, they tried to juice the preorder numbers in hopes that it would juice the total sales numbers — this w…
So a lawyer YouTuber by the name of Moon Channel made a lengthy video about the chances of Stop Killing Games. His conclusion is that even though the movement won’t achieve its goals, it still shows that the public is frustrated and dissatisfied with the status quo of IP laws and that it can still prevent companies from pushing the line being drawn. Even though you may not agree with SKG, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about the conclusion that Moon Channel states?
Here’s the thing. There’s really no good end result involved when the goal is regulation — the best you’ll get is the absolute minimum compliance from those involved. When platforms required «exclusive content» from games to publish on their platform, …
Do you think AAA studios or publishers pay much attention to big indie successes? Your Hollow Knights, Hadeses, Slay the Spires, Minecrafts (once upon a time), Cities Skylines. I know success is hard to replicate in games, and maybe the amount of sales/success is still a whole order of magnitude off, but are there any lessons to be learned? Any bits to (as a good artist) steal?
There’s always things to learn from successes and professional game designers usually play a lot of games to continue learning and growing. Good design is always worth studying and dissecting, analyzing, and learning from. This doesn’t necessarily mean…

As a follow up to your recent answer about game cancellations, don’t game studios need to present a much more coherent plan than that before production starts? I know things can be added or changed during development, but how come I’ve seen the narrative quite often that the creative leads couldn’t settle on a creative decision or direction and it killed the game? I thought games had a much tighter vision at the start of development than that?
I think you’re confusing the part where third-party studios pitch a publisher, compared to the way things work internally. The way the process works internally is we start with a vague idea and a skeleton crew, then each green light meeting at each ste…
Why aren’t there more games with orthogonally projected camera views?
The reason we don’t do it is because our eyeballs perceive things in perspective, not orthogonal projection. The believability of a perspective projection is much higher for the same reason that games feature humans and humanoid characters — it’s what …
Firstly: thank you for this blog and your time! Question: I might be overly cynical, but I’ve noticed that pubs have been pushing “big” CEs for new, often niche / indie / “indie” IPs over the last while — massive boxes, plastic tat, books, records, postcards, etc (sometimes without the game!) — and it’s felt… like a bit of a set up for a new IP or even an entire studio to fail. All of that spend on an unproven / unreleased IP or game can’t go unrecouped and it must balloon like crazy on top of general dev costs. Callisto Protocol is the most recent bad example that’s stuck in my mind, re: a new IP in a niche genre that’s making big promises. The immensity of its CE rose red flags for me as a buyer really into the genre, and decided against pre-ordering out of a gut feeling that something didn’t add up. Ultimately CalP’s issues ran deeper than an overstuffed CE, but I feel like it really didn’t help and contributed to its crash landing. Another new indie, niche, horror IP is getting the same big CE treatment: Reanimal, and I feel concerned the same way I did for CalP. I have total faith in Tarsier’s ability, but at the same time… it seems like a symptom of a greater unnecessary risk being taken under the surface. I’m reminded of EA’s really terrible marketing campaigns for Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space 2 that either directly or indirectly killed or crippled the IP or entire dev teams moving forward — re: no sequel to DI, DS3 was reshaped into a co-op microtransaction storefront to make more money. It seems like history is repeating itself, but with a different skin. I feel such immense pressure shouldn’t be put on a new IP, ESPECIALLY in a niche genre — it’s like pre-loading the gun for Ol’ Yeller while the dog is still healthy because you intend to actively pit it against the rabid animal that will guarantee you will be pulling that trigger later. What are your thoughts as someone within the industry? Are you seeing the same?
Honestly, Collector’s Editions have already been hiding in plain sight as the price hike that people have been dreading for years. All of the Collector’s Edition extras are inexpensive to manufacture at scale, which is what makes them worthwhile to pro…
